Earlier this term, we celebrated the winners of our Design a Comic Strip Competition with a Team GB and ParalympicsGB athlete visit to their school!
We asked young people across the country to design a comic strip showing their visions of what an Olympic or Paralympic Games may look like in the future. The overall winning design came from Maya, age 9, a student at St Monica’s Primary School, Warrington. She was also the winner in the 7–11 age category.
Maya’s comic strip story takes place 1,000 years in the future, at the 3024 Olympic Games. It follows an intergalactic athlete who eats a balanced breakfast of giant space fruit, a power bar and a doughnut, before going on to win gold in a brand-new event – space surfing! Her cosmic creation was printed on the cover of 2 million Aldi leaflets, distributed to customers in stores across the nation.
She celebrated her win over the 1,040 other entrants with Team GB champion gymnast Daniel Purvis and Laurie Williams, ParalympicsGB wheelchair basketball star. They presented Maya with £100 worth of Aldi vouchers, an exclusive Team GB and ParalympicsGB goody bag of signed merchandise, and £1,000 cash for her school, during a special Get Set to Eat Fresh assembly in front of the whole school.
Adam Zavalis, Marketing Director at Aldi UK, said: “This challenge is the latest in a series of activities we’ve created in partnership with Team GB and ParalympicsGB. Maya’s design really stood out to our judges and being selected from hundreds of entries is certainly an achievement to be proud of.”
Our winners in the 5–7 and 11–14 age groups also got a special athlete visit and prize pack, too!
George, age 7, from Westbourne Primary School had great fun during the assembly about healthy eating and staying active, presented by modern pentathlete Samantha Murray and triple Paralympic bronze medallist Aaron McKibbin. George said he was “happy and proud” to have won in his age group and wore his goody bag for the rest of the morning – even during his PE lesson!
Olympic gold medal winning sailor Eilidh McIntyre and para-triathlete Fran Brown visited our final winner, Nusaybah at Azhar Girls Academy School in London. F Mahmud, Curriculum Leader for Art and Design said: “I thought it was a fantastic competition to engage our students in! It encouraged them to learn more about the Olympic and Paralympic Games, research eco-energy ideas and explore healthier eating options in a creative and enjoyable way.”
Congratulations again to our winners – you can see all three designs in our winners announcement.
