FAMILY FUN – Picnic perfection

Summer is full of opportunities to get outside and to take part in all sorts of outings, such as school trips, family picnics, sports days and visits with friends. Ask the children to talk about their outings or use this as an opportunity to plan the food for a family or school trip. Help the children to explore how to plan food and drinks for their trip so that it is fresh, balanced and safe.

  • Ask the children to make a list of possible ideas for foods and drinks they can take on the trip. Some ideas for food on the move may inspire the group.
  • Ask them key questions that will help them develop their thinking
    • Who will be coming on the trip and what are their favourite foods?
    • Do the people coming have any allergies or likes and dislikes?
    • How much food and drinks will be needed and how much will it cost?
  • Use the Eatwell guide to check that the menu is balanced.
  • Ask the children to make a shopping list, and decide what things they will buy and what things they can make themselves.
  • Pick one recipe to practice making together.
  • Discuss how the food will be stored to keep it fresh. Which things need to be chilled to keep them safe? How can the temperature be reduced when you are out? Which items will need an airtight or strong container so that they do not dry out or become squashed? How can they reduce the plastic bags or wrapping used (for example by using reusable containers)?

If your outing is more of a celebration event don’t forget to check our activities and resources to help you plan.
